“Pearsal (1698-1762), a Somerset dissenting minister, who, in writing his ‘Contemp-lations', a mixture of theology, philosophy and religion, was encouraged by Hervey to imitate his very successful 'Meditations'. The Nuremberg engraver, Johann Sebastian Müller, settled in England in 1744, changing his name to Miller, became a leading book illustrator, engraving the plates for 'Ruins of Palmyra' and 'Ruins of Paestum' and also engraved designs for Chippendale. The two plates here are the first in Hammelmann's list of his English work and may well his first published work for an English book.”
